The Health Insurance Marketplace makes it easy for those who have an individual insurance plan and want to explore their different options and then enroll in a new plan.
Through the Marketplace, you’ll be able to find out whether you can get lower costs on monthly premiums and reduce your out-of-pocket costs. You’ll also be able to compare plans based on price, benefits, and any other features that are important to you, so you can find your ideal coverage.
In some cases, you’ll need to wait until the end of your policy year before you can cancel your policy, so make sure you check with your insurance company before canceling.
When Can I Change My Insurance Policy?
When you can change your insurance policy depends on when your current plan ends or is canceled.
If your coverage stops before March 31, 2014, you can use the Marketplace during open enrollment to shop for and replace your individual insurance. If your plan ends or is canceled outside of open enrollment, you may qualify for a special enrollment period in the Marketplace.
It is important to note that voluntarily ending your plan or being terminated for not making payments doesn’t qualify as losing coverage. You will not get a special enrollment period that allows you to enroll outside open enrollment.
In addition, your insurance company may need to provide documentation to the Marketplace that your plan has ended.
